Before Connecting
A Guide for Apple users
Complete these quick steps to access the UConn Network.
- Set a Strong Password
This is necessary for security. A strong password that includes at least one number and one special character (i.e. a symbol) is recommended. To do this, select “System Preferences” from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen. From the System Preferences menu, select “User Accounts.” Select your account from the list; if you do not currently have a password set, there will be a “Create a password” option.
- Apple Updates
Select “Software Update” from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen. Select all items and click “Install.” You may be prompted to restart your computer. – See an example
- Set Firewall
A firewall creates a protective barrier between your computer and potentially damaging content on the Internet or network. We recommend you use the built-in Mac firewall, and uninstall any third-party software.
To do this, select “System Preferences” from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen. From the System Preferences menu, select “Sharing.” In the following menu, select “Firewall;” if it is not currently enabled, there will be a “Start” option. – See an example
- Register your computer
Open a web browser, and you should be automatically redirected to the NetReg page page. Follow the on-screen instructions, and you’ll be all set!
