Before Connecting

A Guide for Windows Vista users

Complete these quick steps to access the UConn Network.

  1. Set a Strong Password

This is necessary for security. A strong password that includes at least one number and one special character (i.e. a symbol) is recommended. To do this, select “Control Panel” from the Start menu. After opening the Control Panel, select “User Accounts.” If you do not currently have a password set, there will be a “Create a password” option. – See an example see it

  2. Ensure your computer has an antivirus program

Without this, you will be vulnerable to viruses. UConn provides Symantec Antivirus free of charge to all students. If you already have a different antivirus program, you are welcome to keep using it.
Symantec Antivirus can be downloaded at http://antivirus.uconn.edu.

  3. Windows Updates (including Service Packs)

Note: You should not install Service Packs if you suspect that your computer has any kind of virus infection. Always run a virus scan when in doubt!

Open the Control Panel, and select “Windows Update.” If you don’t see message that reads “Windows is up to date,” click the “Check for updates” button and install all available updates. You may be prompted to restart your computer. You should also repeat this process at least once to ensure that no other updates are available, as some need to be installed in order. – See an example see it

  4. Set Firewall

A firewall creates a protective barrier between your computer and potentially damaging content on the Internet or network. We recommend you use the built-in Windows firewall, and uninstall any third-party software.

To do this, select “Control Panel” from the Start menu. After opening the Control Panel, select “Windows Firewall.” Make sure it is turned on, and click OK. – See an example see it

  5. Register your computer

Open a web browser, and you should be automatically redirected to the NetReg page. Follow the on-screen instructions, and you’ll be all set!

Strong Password Meter

Try typing your password in the box below to test its strength. If you receive a very strong rating, your password will be accepted for any UConn software.

A strong password should fit these requirements:

  • 8 characters or longer
  • Contains one or more uppercase letters
  • Contains one or more symbols (+ - _ = . @ ?)
  • Includes one or more numbers

Download Symantec Antivirus for Windows

SymantecTo safeguard your computer from viruses and malware, the University offers students a lifetime subscription to Symantec Antivirus for free. You can download it at the UITS downloads page.
