Current Student FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Bandwidth Violations

What does the email from the University about my internet being slowed due to abundant downloading/sharing mean?

Bandwidth Violations occur when students go over their limit (7GB) of internet usage within the allotted time period (1 week). This may also be caused by spyware/viruses too as they can use your bandwidth to send spam from your computer to others.

Manual Registration

How do I use a game console (X Box, PS2, and Game Cubes) or network devices [router (wireless or wired), airports, TIVO] in my room?

Students are allowed to use these devices as long as they are set to the standards of the university. We encourage the use of switches (which do not require registration) instead of routers (which require registration), as routers have caused network connectivity disruptions in the past.

Network Access Block

Why am I getting the Network Access Block page and what is it?

Network Access Blocks occur after a computer is found to be infected with a virus/hack and that infection is spreading to other computers on the network. This occurs when your computer has been compromised due to lack of updates with antivirus and/or windows updates. Other common causes may be due to a lack of account passwords and/or a firewall to protect your computer.

Network Connections

Why Can't I get online?

This could be happening for numerous reasons such as using the incorrect cables (phone vs. Ethernet), the correct jack (phone vs. data), network setting issues etc . The best thing to do is call ResNet phone support from the exact location where you are having the problem to receive help troubleshooting the issue. Also call at the time the issue is occurring rather than waiting especially if your connection is sporadic because it will be difficult to pin point the issue.

Is the network down?

To find out if the UConn network is having problems and not just your computer check our network status page off our main webpage at wiki.resnet.uconn.edu/networkstatus. You can do this from another location, such as a friend's computer or the library.

What do I do if I can’t NetReg?

The NetReg process is required for using the UConn network. It requires the use of your NetID to register your computer for use. Before completing NetReg your computer must have passwords to log on, anti-virus and windows updates completed. Your computer will be scanned for these and any vulnerabilities during this process. If any one of these steps is incomplete NetReg will not work. Mac 10.2 has problems with NetReg so please upgrade your software to a higher operating system on Apple computers.

Virus, Spyware and Adware

Why is my computer slow and having problems with pop-ups? Why is my computer not able to startup or stuck in a reboot cycle?

All of these issues are hard to avoid with the number of viruses and spyware cropping up. Solving this problem may be as simple as running spyware scans. If your computer is being extremely problematic, call ResNet for some tips or check our knowledge base before dropping your computer off to be fixed by ResNet. It may be quicker to troubleshoot over the phone and show you how to take care of the issues yourself because they most likely will reoccur, as there is an incredible amount of malware that comes out regularly on the internet.

Email

What do I do to get rid of the spam emails?

There isn’t anything that can be done when receiving spam emails other than blocking the email address if the mail program allows. Huskymail does not have the feature to block spam. You do not want to unsubscribe or reply to the email as it may only confirm to the spammer that your email address is legitimate resulting in even more junk email.
