Configuring Airport Express in XP

  • Insert the CD-ROM and it should begin automatically
  • At the very first screen, click Next
  • At the "License Agreement," click Yes
  • At the "Information" screen, click Next
  • At the "Choose Destination Location" screen, click Next
  • The "Setup Status" screen will then continue installing the appropriate software
  • Next, the "iTunes Installshield Wizard" will begin
  • At the "iTunes + QuickTime screen," click cancel (These install an older iTunes and Quicktime software, whereas there are newer versions downloadable online)
  • After you cancel the installation of iTunes and Quicktime, open Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
  • Right-click on the "Wireless Network Connection" icon and click Enable
  • The connection, now enabled, will begin aquiring a network address
  • Close the "Network Connections" and "Control Panel" windows
  • Next, open Start > All Programs > Airport > Airport Setup Assistant
  • At the "Introduction screen", click Next
  • At the "Network Setup screen", choose to Set up a new AirPort Base Station
  • Click Next
  • It will now show that the Setup Assistant is connecting to the network
  • Choose to Create a new wireless network
  • Personalize your Wireless Network name and Airport Express name, making sure they are something unique that only you would have
  • Choose 128 bit WEP (more compatible) and create a unique 13-digit password with at least one special character and one number and click Next
  • Choose to connect with a local area connection (LAN) and click Next
  • Choose to Configure TCP/IP Using DHCP and click Next
  • Choose a unique password with at least one special character and one number. Then click Next
  • Review the settings you have entered and then click Update
  • The Base Station will not show that it is restarting
  • Click Finish
  • Next, open Start > All Programs > Airport > Airport Admin Utility
  • At the "Base Station Chooser", choose the name you gave your Airport Express and click Configure
  • You will then be asked for the base station password you chose earlier. Enter it, and click OK
  • At the "Configure" screen, check the box that says Create a Closed Network
  • A popup will open informing you of what it means to close the network. Click OK
  • Click Update
  • Unplug the ethernet cord from the computer and plug an ethernet cord from the wall to the device.
  • Restart the computer
  • Right click on the wireless icon on the bottom right of your computer screen and choose View Available Wireless Networks
  • Select Change the order of preferred networks
  • Click Add under Preferred Networks
  • Enter your SSID and choose Open for "Network Authentication" and WEP for "Data Encryption." Un-check "The key is provded for me automatically" and then enter the 13-digit password you wrote down earlier and confirm it. Leave all boxes unchecked and hit OK
  • Close all open windows and restart the computer
  • YOUR AIRPORT EXPRESS IS NOW SET UP AND READY TO USE! The internet will now be connected automatically every time you start up the computer
