Windows updates are provided by Microsoft in order to keep your computer up-to-date with the latest security patches and optimizations.
Installing Updates in Windows XP/Vista
- Connect to the Windows Update page
- Click on Express Install to install all the critical updates
- Restart the computer, even if not prompted
- Go back to the update site and repeat the above steps until no critical updates remain
- Complete the steps below to ensure that all future updates will be installed
Setting up Automatic Updates in XP
- Click on the Start menu
- Click on Control Panel and then Security Center
- In the window that pops up, select the Automatic Updates link that appears. It has a planet with a Microsoft flag next to it.
- Select the first one, which is Automatic
- In the drop-down menu, Every day should be selected
- The time selected should be when the computer is most likely to be on during the day.
Setting up Automatic Updates in Vista
- Click on the Start menu --> All Programs --> Windows Update
- Click Change Settings
- Under Recommended updates, select Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates
- Click OK
