Windows updates are provided by Microsoft in order to keep your computer up-to-date with the latest security patches and optimizations.

 

Installing Updates in Windows XP/Vista

      1. Connect to the Windows Update page
      2. Click on Express Install to install all the critical updates
      3. Restart the computer, even if not prompted
      4. Go back to the update site and repeat the above steps until no critical updates remain
      5. Complete the steps below to ensure that all future updates will be installed

 

Setting up Automatic Updates in XP

        1. Click on the Start menu
        2. Click on Control Panel and then Security Center
        3. In the window that pops up, select the Automatic Updates link that appears. It has a planet with a Microsoft flag next to it.
        4. Select the first one, which is Automatic
        5. In the drop-down menu, Every day should be selected
        6. The time selected should be when the computer is most likely to be on during the day.

 

Setting up Automatic Updates in Vista

      1. Click on the Start menu --> All Programs --> Windows Update
      2. Click Change Settings
      3. Under Recommended updates, select Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates
      4. Click OK
