Knowledge Base

  • Violations
  • What is It?

Bandwidth is all the information your computer transmits to and receives from the internet. Each UConn student is limited to approximately 10 gigabytes of bandwidth each week. Every time you browse the web, talk on instant messenger or download a file, you use up some of your bandwidth.

The official bandwith policy can be found at: http://security.uconn.edu/guides/bandwidth.html

How do you get a violation?

A Bandwidth Violation occurs if any/all computers registered to a particular NetID have a combined bandwidth of over 10 gb in any 7-day period.

    How to Check

You can check your bandwidth usage online at http://palmer.uits.uconn.edu/bandwidth/index.php

In the event of a bandwidth violation, "Bandwidth Limiting" will display "On" in the table

    How to Get Exceptions

In order to be considered an exception to this rule, you must have a legitimate academic reason for exceeding 10 gb in a week. In this case, you will have to settle this with UITS by forwarding that email to security@uconn.edu as well as getting professor approval.
