What is it?
A Copyright Violation implies that UConn has been contacted by the RIAA and/or the MPAA. The university only acts as an intermediary between students and these groups by informing students that a violation of the University's copyright policy has occured. The university copyright policy was created in order to prevent the university from receiving lawsuits and to educate students to prevent these groups from suing them directly.
How is copyright tracked?
We are unsure how the RIAA and MPAA find out about downloading/sharing that students are doing. The university only gets notified after the fact.
Email Notification
- Students will get blocked from the internet except for UConn sites, much like a network access block.
- Students get an e-mail notifying them of the violation. There is a link to a site where they can log-in to see the complaint against them.
- It will list the IP address the violation occured on, the file, and date that caused the violation.
Consequences
The first time a warning is given the student must remove the illegal material and follow the directions in the e-mail.
The second time they will also receive an e-mail, but the student will also be referred to the Dean of Students Office of Community Standards for judicial action.
