Copyright Violation
Network Access Blocked For Unlawful File Sharing
The RIAA and the MPAA enforce copyright laws and will contact UConn if they discover a violation. UConn is then obligated to contact the student and enforce the university’s copyright policy. A student’s computer will be blocked from the internet if illegal material is found on their computer. If a student has more than one violation, they will be referred to the Office of Community Standards for judicial action.
Problem
Students who receive Copyright Violations are redirected to a page that will explicitly state that the computer was blocked due to a copyright violation. An email will also be sent to the student informing them of the infraction. Until this issue is resolved with the university, the computer will be blocked from the internet.
Solution
First copyright violation – The email will instruct students to remove the illegal material from their computer. The name of the illegal file will be included in the email that is sent to the student. They then have to input a code into the website listed in the email to unblock their internet.
Second copyright violation – If a student receives this violation more than once, he or she will be referred to the Office of Community Standards for judicial action.
Note: If there are more than two violations the student is in jeopardy of losing their internet connection at UConn.
Prevention
Using programs such as Lime Wire and BearShare are not only harmful to your computer, but illegal. If you would like to obtain files such as music or television programs, you must purchase them via legal programs such as ITunes or Napster.
Do not illegally download or install copyrighted material onto your computer. |
